Etsu Essence Inoue Japanese-Canadian painting artist and Calligrapher |
Etsu began studying traditional Japanese monochrome brushwork |
|
(Japanese style Calligraphy) at the age of eight.
Along the way she discovered that she could marry traditional and
contemporary art by adding color to the monochrome style, which led to
creating her own painting style.
Because she focuses on nature, all of Etsu's art materials are made by
nature. Her art is expressed on Washi paper (traditional Japanese paper),
with black ink stick and natural powder pigments. These pigments are made
of fine sand or clay, rock and have a history that goes back more than two
thousand years. | |
Etsu's modern motifs are based on the style of Japanese antique folding
screens, with gold leaf and gold powder used for the backgrounds. She
continues to explore new art forms while also spreading the charm of
Japanese traditional culture in Canada
Active member status in the Federation of Canadian Artists.
member of Society of Canadian Artists
member of American Water color Society
Etsu & Calligraphy | |
Etsu began studying traditional Japanese monochrome brushwork at age of eight. In high school she began studying with a
famous calligrapher and continues till today.
She moved to Vancouver 1989. She has been working to spread the art of Japanese calligraphy and Japanese watercolour
painting in Canada. Last year she began collaborating with musicians. In her performances, she expresses how the music makes
her feel in the moment. | |
Her desire is to continue spreading the art of Japanese calligraphy in Canada, and collaborate with artists of other genres,
a nd to share the and educate the public about the spirituality and beauty of traditional Japanese calligraphy.

Washi Paper | |
Washi is a type of paper made in Japan. Washi is commonly made using fibers from the bark of the Gampi tree, the Mitsumata
shrub | |
(Edgeworthia papyrifera) or the paper mulberry but also can be made using bamboo, hemp, rice and wheat. "WA" meaning
Japanese & "SHI" meaning paper. Washi is used i many traditional arts. Origami, Calligraphy, Painting.
Brushes | |
Japanese water colour painting brushes are similar to the brushes used for calligraphy and are traditionally made from
bamboo with goat, ox, horse, sheep, rabbit, marten...
Black ink stick (SUMI) | |
This black ink stick is made of densely packed charcoal ash from bamboo or pine soot combined with glue extracted from
Nikawa.Ink stick graind their own ink using an ink stick and grinding stone.
Pigments (Iwa-enogu) | |
The history of the colouring materials used for Japanese painting goes back more than thousand years. The basic materials
used werethe powdered ores of peacock stone, indigo copper, lapis lazuli, etc, and they were frequently used for the old
murals and picture scrolls. With passage of theme, more devices were incorporated in production of these colouring
materials, and they were called IWAENOGU (Japanese antique colours). Today Iwaenogu is graded according to the coarseness
of the powdered material, which vary from very fine sand to clay. The powders are mixed with NIKAWA (a glue made from
a gelatinous material), which acts as adhesive to bind the powdered pigments and the paper.IWAENOGU is known to be
extremely compatible with the Japanese paper and to retain it's original without fading. |
